5. 8. Salt Formations as Repositories for Hydrocarbons and Radioactive Waste

Print

Convenors: Gernold Zulauf and Jörg Hammer
Session language: Englisch

Topic:
Rock salt is generally characterized by low porosity, low permeability and low water content. Thus thick salt layers and especially diapirs have been targeted as storage sites for gas and crude oil, and are also considered for the long term disposal of radioactive waste to exclude a threat to current and future generations. The session will cover various aspects of internal structure and behaviour of salt rocks. A special focus is directed to the understanding of emplacement, deformation and properties of rock salt and anhydrite, which are of interest concerning advanced problems in storage and waste disposal.
