A revised International Stratigraphic Guide has been proposed by Maria Bianca Cita (Milano) who both chaired and reorganized the International Subcommission on Stratigraphic Nomenclature (ISSC) 2000–2008. The new guide will focus on developments in post-Hedberg stratigraphy. Basic articles have already been published in Newsletters on Stratigraphy addressing cyclostratigraphy, chemostratigraphy, and magnetostratigraphy. These methods underwent a significant development after the publication of the Hedbergs´s (1976) Stratigraphic Guide. Both the potential and limitations of these and other methods (e.g., biostratigraphy, lithostratigraphy, seismostratigraphy, sequencestratigraphy, climatostratigraphy, and graphic correlation techniques) be presented using topical examples.
